The cathedral, the rooftop terraces and the museum each run on their own timetable, and the museum shuts on Wednesdays. Ten minutes spent on the hours before you set out is the difference between a full visit and a rushed one.

Opening Hours

  • The Duomo is not one building on one schedule. The cathedral, the rooftop terraces and the museum each keep their own hours, and the museum takes a day off midweek.

    Cathedral: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., every day of the year. The last ticket is sold at 5:50 p.m. and the last entry is at 6:00 p.m. Closing procedures start at 6:30 p.m., so arriving at five to six gets you in but gives you about half an hour.

    Rooftop Terraces: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the same last ticket and last entry as the cathedral. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the summer season, and on selected public holidays, the terraces stay open until 8:00 p.m. with the last entry at 7:00 p.m.

    Duomo Museum and Church of San Gottardo in Corte: 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., last admission 6:00 p.m., closed on Wednesdays. If Wednesday is the only day you have, plan on the cathedral and the terraces instead.

    Hours move around for religious celebrations, restoration work and public holidays, so it’s worth checking the current schedule close to your visit.

Best Times to Visit

  • The Duomo is one of the most visited buildings in Italy, and the gap between arriving at opening and arriving at lunchtime is the gap between a cathedral and a crowd.

    First thing: arrive close to opening and the nave is quiet enough to hear your own footsteps, with low sun coming through the stained glass.

    Late afternoon on the roof: the marble takes on colour in the last couple of hours of light, which is when the terraces photograph best.

    Summer evenings: through the summer season the terraces stay open until 8:00 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, last entry 7:00 p.m. In 2026 that runs from 5 June to 13 September.

    Heat: the terraces are fully exposed and there’s no shade. Through high summer the Veneranda Fabbrica staffs a medical point on the roof from midday to 5:00 p.m. and sets out water distribution points; in 2026 that ran from 15 June to 13 September. Visits in the middle of the day are not recommended in high summer for anyone with heart, breathing or mobility difficulties.

    Season and day: April to June and September to October give you the kindest weather. Winter days are short but the queues are shorter with them. Any weekday beats a Saturday.
